Open Water

Open Water with Columbus SCUBAOpen Water is our most popular course. This class will teach you the necessary fundamentals of diving and will enable you to legally dive, purchase equipment, buy air, board a dive charter, and continue your diving education. It is a LIFETIME certification. It does not expire. However, if you go long periods of time without diving, we encourage you to take a dive refresher to familiarize yourself.

There are 3 components to our open water certification courses:

Academics - Where you learn the theory behind diving and the principles of scuba.

Confined Water Training - Where you practice the actual sport of scuba diving.

Open Water Sessions - Where you demonstrate what you learned and the final step in certification!

We are cross certified to teach from the following agencies:

• IANTD (International Association of Nitrox and Technical Diving)
• PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors)
• CMAS (Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques)
• SEI (Scuba Educators International)

Please let us know if there is a specific agency that you would like to be certified under.

The Open Water course cost can be found on our price page. There are no hidden fees in our course cost.  The cost includes your books, certification, equipment rental, air, dive tables, and Open Water checkout dives.

You are encouraged to purchase your own mask, fins, snorkel and exposure suit as these are personal fitting items. We would be happy to provide you with our recommendations.  In the unlikely event you don’t complete the course, we’ll buy them back.  We are that sure that you’ll enjoy our course.

Open Water dives begin in the later part of May when the water and air temperatures have warmed. We utilize all of Ohio's great diving quarries for the Open Water checkout dives. There are several dates to choose from throughout the warmer months. If you choose to do your dives with another instructor, a referral letter will be provided for you.

Classes are generally held in the evenings, once a week, and last five weeks. Specific nights can be arranged upon request. Check out our class schedule page for specific dates that are planned.
