Our History

Andy Silverman

Owner & Instructor Trainer-Trainer

Andy is the founder and owner of Columbus Scuba. He got his start as an instructor with the first accredited certifying agency, YMCA SCUBA. There he earned the rating of Instructor Trainer and was asked to serve on the National Advisory Committee in program development and standards while continuing as technical advisor for the East Coast region.

In 2011, Andy received the prestigious Platinum Pro 5000 award. Only a select few of the most elite and prominent divers (including Jacques Cousteau) in the WORLD hold this award. He has also been awarded ELITE 300 by PADI and is 1 of 52 instructors out of 136,000 world-wide dive professionals to earn this award.

Andy currently directs the diving program at International Field Studies in Andros, Bahamas which hosts the 3rd largest barrier reef in the world along with beautiful oceanic and inland Blue Holes and caves.

Today Andy sits on the Advisory Board for International Nitrox and Technical Diving (IANTD).

Andy also works with leading equipment manufacturers with field testing and product development.

Columbus SCUBA, Inc. began in 1999 when SCUBA instructor Andy Silverman began working as an aquatics director for one of the nation's largest non-profit organizations. Andy Silverman's first enterprise was knows as Decostop, Inc. Initially, classes were small training only 3 or 4 students at a time. Before long, student referrals resulted in larger classes and demanded more space.

In 2005, Decostop Inc. was transformed into Columbus SCUBA, Inc. (CSI). Andy Silverman was asked to serve as the Technical Advisor for the YMCA SCUBA program and CSI became the primary touchpoint. Andy left his position as an executive director so he could fully focus on CSI.

In September of 2008, International Field Studies (IFS) in Andros, Bahamas called upon CSI for leadership of their dive program. IFS works with college and high school students in the diving and marine research arena.

Columbus SCUBA, Inc. teaches at over 40 facilities and uses many Ohio quarries along with oceans around the world for certification. CSI still believes in small classes for personal attention.

CSI serves well over 100 students a month along with many local and state public safety teams, US military, and other national entities. Columbus Scuba, Inc. has over 100 rental rigs, numerous compressors, Nitrox blending capabilities and is an authorized dealer for over 35 brands.

CSI and its instructors have issued over 6500 certifications collectively, both locally and abroad. CSI is affiliated with several training agencies, works within a network of colleges, public diving safety teams, field study stations, and dive shops all around the country. CSI has become the most versatile training center in the state, including offering training courses from Open Water to Technical Diving to Cave Diving.

CSI has also gained recognition in the press and has also published articles with several dive-training agencies. Most importantly, we spend more time during the week in the water, both for training and pleasure purposes. We are situated to serve your diving needs whether it be equipment, training, professional development or travel.

We invite you to join our fun, energetic and very knowledgeable staff, friends and family in the wonderful sport of diving!
